Slaughter Beach, Dog has introduced a new track titled ‘Engine,’ serving as the last preview release from their much-anticipated album Crying, Laughing, Waving, Smiling , which is set to arrive on September 22 through Lame-O Records. The song joins the ranks of previously shared singles such as ‘Strange Weather’, ‘Float Away’, and ‘Summer Windows’. Give the 9-minute opus a listen below.
Regarding ‘Engine,’ frontman Jake Ewald shared his insights:
My relationship with this song keeps evolving. Initially, I thought it didn’t mean anything particular. Later I related it to the band’s van, then to [Slaughter Beach, Dog bassist] Ian [Farmer], not understanding why the guitar solo touched me so deeply. Outside the Sinclair one chilly January evening, a flyer for a local show made me reflect on our journey. Suddenly, I felt incredibly sentimental. A decade has been spent anticipating an alternate existence, where I’d be trading heavy equipment for spreadsheets, meddling with odds and ends – a simpler time.
Now, I perceive this song as a requiem for the transformations that never came to be. A decade has passed, yet I’m still wrestling with the burden of freedom, occasionally losing sight of rock’n’roll’s vast embrace – a sturdy structure from which to hang, a narrative in which to reside. It involves mastering forms, defying conventions, discovering allies, and endlessly exploring life’s enigmas and profound emotional downpours. I’m continuously discovering myself through this song, learning to make peace with the experiences etched into its notes. There’s a haunting aspect – acknowledging the pain rooted in belonging, so deeply grounded in one place that departure isn’t taken lightly. It’s about remaining steadfast when faced with a sudden challenge, and in the most hushed tone, affirming to oneself, this is my home.
