Captivating Frames from “Never Rarely Sometimes Always”

With a poignant and understated style, Eliza Hittman brings to the screen a narrative that is both intimate and starkly realistic in Never Rarely Sometimes Always. Unveiled at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, it garnered critical acclaim including the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Neo-Realism. In the subsequent months, the tale of two resilient teens won numerous awards and nominations.

The film portrays seventeen-year-old Autumn, portrayed by Sidney Flanigan in her debut role, who finds herself pregnant but unable to obtain an abortion without parental consent in her home state. After several failed self-attempts to end her pregnancy, she confides in her cousin Skylar, played by Talia Ryder. Skylar immediately steps up, arranging a secretive journey to New York City. Confronted with numerous challenges, Autumn and Skylar’s unwavering support for each other remains a moving testament to their bond. Straying from common teen drama narratives, the film presents a compelling and unsettlingly real coming-of-age experience.

We present a selection of the most evocative snapshots from this deeply moving film, captured by cinematographer Hélène Louvart.
