The fashion industry mourns the loss of the illustrious French designer Thierry Mugler, who passed away at 73 years old. An announcement on his official Instagram account stated, “It is with profound sorrow that we inform you of Mr. Manfred Thierry Mugler’s death on Sunday, January 23rd, 2022.” His legacy will live on, and may he Rest in Peace. At present, no details regarding the cause of his passing have been made public.
Thierry Mugler, a pioneer in fashion, reshaped the industry by incorporating celebrities into his runway shows. Legendary figures such as Beyoncé and David Bowie—whom Mugler outfitted for a 1979 ‘Saturday Night Live’ appearance—benefited from his visionary design work, along with others like Lady Gaga, Diana Ross, George Michael, and Cardi B.
Withdrawing from active design in 2003, Mugler turned his attention to perfume and stage costume creation. Still, his fashion house continued to dress megastars. Rihanna, Dua Lipa, and Katy Perry have been seen in Mugler creations, with Lady Gaga donning a retro Mugler gown for her memorable arrival at the 2011 Grammys. Mugler also designed all the costumes for Beyoncé’s ‘I Am…’ tour in 2009, serving as the artistic director. A tribute featuring a collage of his work for Beyoncé along with a heartfelt message saying “Rest in peace Thierry Mugler,” was displayed on Beyoncé’s website.
